I normally end up making hair bows for my niece for her birthdays, but I've been wanting to make a <a href="http://www.marthastewart.com/264299/black-apple-doll">Black Apple</a> doll for some time. I wanted to make Repunzel, but wasn't sure how to make long hair hang down in the back. After asking around, a friend suggested a wig, and I kind of like how it turned out.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Hih7Nj8-laQ/UD_W2RWssnI/AAAAAAAAAZg/HZk9Hl7bTfw/s1600/IMG_4157.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Hih7Nj8-laQ/UD_W2RWssnI/AAAAAAAAAZg/HZk9Hl7bTfw/s320/IMG_4157.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div align="center">
</div>
<div align="center">
Now she can be long haired Repunzel, or Repunzel with a hair cut.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-p0b3kPIA9qE/UD_XA6ZQ18I/AAAAAAAAAZo/RS3KQmiLlFg/s1600/IMG_4159.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-p0b3kPIA9qE/UD_XA6ZQ18I/AAAAAAAAAZo/RS3KQmiLlFg/s320/IMG_4159.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And why not make a <a href="http://www.danamadeit.com/2008/07/tutorial-the-market-skirt.html">market skirt</a> (minus the pockets) for the birthday girl to match her doll?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I've also been wanting to make a machine embroidered shirt using <a href="http://www.marthastewart.com/270877/freehand-embroidery">this technique</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It turned out to be harder than I expected. Even with the stabilizer, the fabric shifted on me a lot.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XnkUJOZcmsg/UD_XRImiVvI/AAAAAAAAAZw/WYGoraqoMOc/s1600/IMG_4160.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XnkUJOZcmsg/UD_XRImiVvI/AAAAAAAAAZw/WYGoraqoMOc/s320/IMG_4160.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This was a little easier. I sewed diamond shaped t-shirt material onto the shirt and stitched stripes on top to make an argyle pattern.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZGzdCd3VmN4/UD_XiDz49hI/AAAAAAAAAZ4/4v5LG6IYeYU/s1600/IMG_4162.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZGzdCd3VmN4/UD_XiDz49hI/AAAAAAAAAZ4/4v5LG6IYeYU/s320/IMG_4162.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It's hard to come up with ideas for handmade boy gifts...I can't imagine that clothes are really that exciting of a present.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'd love suggestions for next years gift for a 9 year old boy.</div>

Here's what I found at Old Navy.<br />
<a href="http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=79586&vid=1&pid=253333&scid=253333022"><img alt="" class="gridProdImg" id="cimg_569122_569122012_59112" productimagepath="http://www3.assets-gap.com/webcontent/0004/954/131/cn4954131.jpg" src="http://www3.assets-gap.com/webcontent/0004/954/131/cn4954131.jpg" /><img alt="" class="gridProdImg" id="cimg_559738_559738002_59112" productimagepath="http://www1.assets-gap.com/webcontent/0004/950/213/cn4950213.jpg" src="http://www1.assets-gap.com/webcontent/0004/950/213/cn4950213.jpg" /><img alt="" class="gridProdImg" id="cimg_253336_253336032_59112" productimagepath="http://www3.assets-gap.com/webcontent/0004/949/751/cn4949751.jpg" src="http://www3.assets-gap.com/webcontent/0004/949/751/cn4949751.jpg" /><img alt="" class="gridProdImg" id="cimg_252725_252725022_59112" productimagepath="http://www3.assets-gap.com/webcontent/0005/052/840/cn5052840.jpg" src="http://www3.assets-gap.com/webcontent/0005/052/840/cn5052840.jpg" /><img alt="" class="gridProdImg" id="cimg_118024_118024022_79586" productimagepath="http://www3.assets-gap.com/webcontent/0004/867/270/cn4867270.jpg" src="http://www3.assets-gap.com/webcontent/0004/867/270/cn4867270.jpg" /><img alt="" class="gridProdImg" id="cimg_253333_253333022_79586" productimagepath="http://www1.assets-gap.com/webcontent/0005/037/155/cn5037155.jpg" src="http://www1.assets-gap.com/webcontent/0005/037/155/cn5037155.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
And maybe I'll to put together a <a href="http://www.crafterhoursblog.com/2009/11/milkmaid-skirt-tutorial.html">Milk Maid Skirt</a> from Crafterhours.<br />
<br />
So I'll be looking for gauze like material, chambre, large men's button ups, lightweight jersy and lightwight cotton...actually, I should probably look through my stash of already thrifted materials first...but I'd really like to get a hold of some chambre or linen material.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">I wanted a girly shirt to wear with<a href="http://whenigetitalltogether.blogspot.com/2012/02/taking-notes-and-market-skirts.html"> my taking notes skirt</a>, and didn't want to spend the money on it. So I took a boxy button up shirt that was a little too big and some pleated fabric to make a ruffled shirt. I found this <a href="http://www.chic-steals.com/2010/04/how-make-ruffled-from-mens-shirt.html">tutorial</a> from Chic Steals, but I didn't want to make it this complicated so...</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">I did this. I thought I had already posted this, so lets see if I can remember what I did.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">First, I tried the shirt on, inside out and pinned along the sides and underarms where I wanted to take it in to make it more form fitting. I drew a line on one of the sides between my pins and cut away excess fabric. I used the excess fabric to show how much to cut off on the other side so it would be symetrical (even if I'm not).</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RoRv5D153Nk/T835kJvk9HI/AAAAAAAAAW8/1LsjRyBAzx0/s1600/IMG_4039.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RoRv5D153Nk/T835kJvk9HI/AAAAAAAAAW8/1LsjRyBAzx0/s640/IMG_4039.JPG" width="480" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-B6hT_jz7t9s/T835j7H4gNI/AAAAAAAAAWw/QFCJzwcIibg/s1600/IMG_4041.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-B6hT_jz7t9s/T835j7H4gNI/AAAAAAAAAWw/QFCJzwcIibg/s1600/IMG_4041.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-B6hT_jz7t9s/T835j7H4gNI/AAAAAAAAAWw/QFCJzwcIibg/s1600/IMG_4041.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-B6hT_jz7t9s/T835j7H4gNI/AAAAAAAAAWw/QFCJzwcIibg/s1600/IMG_4041.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"> </a></div><div style="text-align: center;">I sewed the sides closed, zig zagged, and top stitched on one side of the seam to hold the seam allowance down. This also made the seems look more like the original.</div><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-B6hT_jz7t9s/T835j7H4gNI/AAAAAAAAAWw/QFCJzwcIibg/s1600/IMG_4041.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-B6hT_jz7t9s/T835j7H4gNI/AAAAAAAAAWw/QFCJzwcIibg/s400/IMG_4041.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;"> Where I ripped out the stitching, I basted and gathered the lower piece to match the upper, stuck it back inside and sewed it shut.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

And since she ended up looking like <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Eloises-Guide-Life-Travel-Forever/dp/0689833105/ref=sr_1_10?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1330790260&sr=1-10">Eloise</a> in her <a href="http://whenigetitalltogether.blogspot.com/2011/11/birthday-tea-party.html">birthday jumper</a>, I decided to make her a <a href="http://prudentbaby.com/2010/11/baby-kid/long-sleeve-peasant-dress-tutorial-2/">peasant dress</a> instead, but it just seemed to need something more. So, I decided to elasticize the waist and add some ties in the back.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PZyr9HNh8h8/T1I3jnb1oyI/AAAAAAAAAUk/OimOcKB7BPQ/s400/IMG_3979.JPG" width="400" /></div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">I cut 2 rectangles the width of the dress waist, sewed them together and turned them right side out. Then I top stitched, sewing ribbons for ties onto the ends. </div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TaqOTT0Dd5k/T1I394BERaI/AAAAAAAAAUs/wC_0ss78DYI/s1600/IMG_3980.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TaqOTT0Dd5k/T1I394BERaI/AAAAAAAAAUs/wC_0ss78DYI/s400/IMG_3980.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">I attatched the rectangle to the skirt along the top and bottom top stitching and 2 more line along the length that divided the rectangle into thirds, and cut 3 lengths of elastic that were a couple inches shorter than the rectangle. </div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UD2DqYIwBF0/T1I4VW1f5yI/AAAAAAAAAU0/_1v2GDOSvWQ/s1600/IMG_3981.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UD2DqYIwBF0/T1I4VW1f5yI/AAAAAAAAAU0/_1v2GDOSvWQ/s400/IMG_3981.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">I threaded the elastic through the casings, pulling to the disired gathering and pinning in place. I secured them by sewing over the side top stitching and trimming the ends of the elastic. </div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZEuxo5wL_wU/T1I48737ejI/AAAAAAAAAU8/917IeB3KS7Y/s1600/IMG_3987.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZEuxo5wL_wU/T1I48737ejI/AAAAAAAAAU8/917IeB3KS7Y/s400/IMG_3987.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">Then I dressed the girls up to go outside and model, but they thought it was time to play (see the girl standing on the picknick table?). </div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-44Qts4hx_jY/T1I5ktNYRKI/AAAAAAAAAVE/1SVaLYDiZ6c/s1600/IMG_3996.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-44Qts4hx_jY/T1I5ktNYRKI/AAAAAAAAAVE/1SVaLYDiZ6c/s400/IMG_3996.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">So, it was hard to get a good picture...all those distractions. </div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jcXs929Z9H4/T1I6OQPV2JI/AAAAAAAAAVM/NGH-hZ1XhbQ/s1600/IMG_3999.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jcXs929Z9H4/T1I6OQPV2JI/AAAAAAAAAVM/NGH-hZ1XhbQ/s400/IMG_3999.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">I think she's trying to look like Eloise too. </div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vMTHviMQNo4/T1I64EPtjVI/AAAAAAAAAVU/budcRPuKxxQ/s1600/IMG_4002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vMTHviMQNo4/T1I64EPtjVI/AAAAAAAAAVU/budcRPuKxxQ/s400/IMG_4002.JPG" width="400" /></a> </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Amazingly enough, we managed to NOT get grass stains and dirt on our new frocks, so I won't have to wash them before Easter...which means they won't have to be ironed either (yeah)!!! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here's what we did yesterday!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pySOjdsONx8/T1Ix3OC6bGI/AAAAAAAAAUE/4jiviPeyveI/s400/IMG_4022.JPG" width="400" /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Nothing professional, but we had fun.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lhPMsh3mJLo/T1IyMgy0CiI/AAAAAAAAAUM/8weeq-NuIpg/s1600/IMG_4025.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lhPMsh3mJLo/T1IyMgy0CiI/AAAAAAAAAUM/8weeq-NuIpg/s640/IMG_4025.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
They are supposed to be hats. The potato was the cheapest thing I could think of to ruin for a toothpick holder, but the outcome seems somewhat Seuss-like to me (if only I had dyed it purple...).</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-e51Wfx9mSCc/T1IynRE-poI/AAAAAAAAAUU/lKiwN3-k99A/s1600/IMG_4035.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-e51Wfx9mSCc/T1IynRE-poI/AAAAAAAAAUU/lKiwN3-k99A/s400/IMG_4035.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
It was just us, but I hope the girls remember having fun as a family when they get older. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I made these skirts following the basic idea of tutorials that I mentioned before. Z's is basically a <a href="http://www.danamadeit.com/2009/07/the-market-skirt-tutorial.html">Market skirt</a> from Made, and mine is a <a href="http://sewingin-nomansland.blogspot.com/2010/08/taking-notes-skirt-tutorial.html">Taking Notes skirt</a> from Sewing in No Man's Land.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GhtSnNegT94/T0qOE6wZoJI/AAAAAAAAATk/62nFykD3SjE/s640/IMG_3972.JPG" width="480" /> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Doesn't it look like we have a good secret...well, if she looks at the camera instead it normally looks like the next picture. Much to her parent's embarrassment and frustration. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Can you tell there is some drama at our house. We are a rather expressive family.</div>

I must say though, she is a good story teller. She gets it from her father. </div>

...and of course anything big sister can do, little sister can do too!</div>Hilaryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14838930100436568142noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2249402161268398562.post-39721164581702214672012-02-22T15:50:00.002-06:002012-02-22T22:10:03.536-06:00My Yoga Waistband Skirt Tutorial<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">My husband was generous and paid for some material I picked out at Hobby Lobby the other day! Here's some my daughter picked out that might take a while becoming a skirt (what, you say it won't happen on its own!?).</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8xIc9Zyvyao/T0U5JQtn7EI/AAAAAAAAARk/KokQzpcU1ZA/s1600/IMG_3949.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8xIc9Zyvyao/T0U5JQtn7EI/AAAAAAAAARk/KokQzpcU1ZA/s320/IMG_3949.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">And as I said before I wanted to make an a-line skirt with a yoga waistband for myself and couldn't find a tutorial I really liked for woven fabric. So, I thought I would share what I did. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I'm going to refer to a hip measurement because I have hips and need the room to get my skirt on if it doesn't have a zipper. If you are going to make this skirt for a child or you don't have much of a hip, you could probably just use your waist measurement.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> Here are the pieces I started out with:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">2 waistband pieces (waist-5")/2 x 10" (mine was 11.5" x 10")</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">2 skirt pieces and 2 lining pieces using this pattern</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TJAZgB_reW8/T0VcJy5w3lI/AAAAAAAAATc/OWx3N9_jau4/s1600/A+Line+Skirt+Pattern.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TJAZgB_reW8/T0VcJy5w3lI/AAAAAAAAATc/OWx3N9_jau4/s320/A+Line+Skirt+Pattern.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dzt-71ThpSo/T0U5ivuQx-I/AAAAAAAAARs/tcIc48xrM0c/s1600/IMG_3950.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dzt-71ThpSo/T0U5ivuQx-I/AAAAAAAAARs/tcIc48xrM0c/s320/IMG_3950.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> I followed directions for the waistband that are easy to find posted on blogs. But I found I really had to try it on to figure out how narrow to make it. Actually, I had to take this skirt apart after I wore it a day and make the waistband a couple inches narrower (I took this into account when I gave you measurements above). Knits vary so much in their stretchiness.</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4-NYVOUIX7Y/T0U57ZTA_VI/AAAAAAAAAR0/2WyO8NjztyU/s1600/IMG_3951.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4-NYVOUIX7Y/T0U57ZTA_VI/AAAAAAAAAR0/2WyO8NjztyU/s320/IMG_3951.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-m2tL1-1T1RQ/T0U6W7XXkYI/AAAAAAAAAR8/Zfb4ZbP9_mQ/s1600/IMG_3952.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-m2tL1-1T1RQ/T0U6W7XXkYI/AAAAAAAAAR8/Zfb4ZbP9_mQ/s320/IMG_3952.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Sew sides together and finish edges on skirt. Repeat on lining.</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Jyi9cnJal3s/T0U62f6VsRI/AAAAAAAAASE/qvvDwxHChZo/s1600/IMG_3953.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Jyi9cnJal3s/T0U62f6VsRI/AAAAAAAAASE/qvvDwxHChZo/s320/IMG_3953.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">With right side of lining facing wrong side of skirt (so they are both right sides out), baste across the top front and again at the top of the back. This way you can gather from both sides.</div><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Gather skirt top to fit waistband and pin waistband to right side of skirt with cut edge of waistband lined up with top edge of skirt.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Top stitch with raw edges toward skirt.</div><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Top stitch.</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YbPDFsuc3is/T0U84rb8dSI/AAAAAAAAASs/MpOaGfFI-Ho/s1600/IMG_3959.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YbPDFsuc3is/T0U84rb8dSI/AAAAAAAAASs/MpOaGfFI-Ho/s320/IMG_3959.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Ta da! But it's still gathered more in the front than I would like...</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Qq54pggpsdk/T0U9MYmcl2I/AAAAAAAAAS0/Bn2aX8AWkfc/s1600/IMG_3965.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Qq54pggpsdk/T0U9MYmcl2I/AAAAAAAAAS0/Bn2aX8AWkfc/s400/IMG_3965.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">So when I made this skirt I adjusted my pattern at the waist. The front pieces are waist/4 + 1", and the back pieces are (hip-front skirt piece + 2")/2. Length and skirt hem measurements are the same.</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LEk3p0okO48/T0VR95b50eI/AAAAAAAAAS8/BZMbT-x_xHs/s1600/IMG_3966.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LEk3p0okO48/T0VR95b50eI/AAAAAAAAAS8/BZMbT-x_xHs/s400/IMG_3966.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UadkkWYopX8/T0VScRzX0VI/AAAAAAAAATE/ND-PIBqj-Qc/s1600/IMG_3955.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a> Hmm...I keep trying to tell my camera man to leave the flash off. I was going to show you what I got the other day but I was having trouble with my computer, so I'll show you another day.<br />
<br />
I'm excited to get started on some skirts, mostly for the oldest and myself.<br />
<br />
I want to make this <a href="http://sewingin-nomansland.blogspot.com/2010/08/taking-notes-skirt-tutorial.html">Taking Notes Skirt from Sewing in No Man's Land</a> for myself. I'm not sure if I'll make the matching little girl's skirts or not.<br />

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I want to make some yoga waistband skirts too, but I haven't found a tutorial for the skirt part that I like. I want an A-line, and I have some ideas. Maybe I'll show you after this weekend (Grams is taking the girls, and hubby will be busy), or maybe there is a reason I haven't found a tutorial I like.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

Here is some of my inspiration for the girl's skirts with links.</div>

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I have been wanting to get a bigger purse so I can throw a diaper and some wipes in and get rid of the diaper bag. My father-in-law gave me a purse organizer for Christmas. So...I decided to base my measurements so the organizer would fit in my new purse, and that way I wouldn't need to make pockets.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">So I figured the height(h), width(w), and depth(d) that I wanted for my finished purse and made my rectangle (h+1"+1/2d) by (w +1"+1/2d). I wanted a purse that was 9"high x 13" wide x 3" deep, so my rectangle measured (9+1+1.5=)11.5" x (13+1+1.5=)15.5. I cut two of these rectangles from my main fabric (and applied iron on interfacing), and two from my lining fabric.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LGoJlgDZM78/TzbXgi7O2-I/AAAAAAAAAOc/1B0JQWI5EFw/s320/IMG_3914.JPG" width="320" /></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I cut out an a rounded rectangle 1" wider than I wanted my finished product and long enough to experiment with out of interfaced main fabric and lining fabric.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LNmaDDu7Xgg/TzbX3_85bNI/AAAAAAAAAOk/_HkD4TKkDW8/s1600/IMG_3915.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LNmaDDu7Xgg/TzbX3_85bNI/AAAAAAAAAOk/_HkD4TKkDW8/s320/IMG_3915.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I cut out a piece for my strap twice as wide as I wanted the finished strap plus 1" and long enough to hang over my shoulder and attach the bag where I wanted. I stitched the long sides into a tube(right sides together), turned it right side out and top stitched close to the seams (I tried to interface the strap, but was having a hard time getting it to stick and when I turned it right side out, I'm sure it got all wonky. I don't think I would have used interfacing if I had known the outcome, especially since I used such a heavy weight fabric anyway. Luckily, I used a lightweight interfacing, so the problem isn't noticeable.)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-e_nzxXm1fZs/TzbYQ38C_9I/AAAAAAAAAOs/sYOgDuWiyUw/s1600/IMG_3916.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-e_nzxXm1fZs/TzbYQ38C_9I/AAAAAAAAAOs/sYOgDuWiyUw/s320/IMG_3916.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Hmm...I forgot to take a picture of my ruffle piece before I started sewing, but I cut 1 rectangle twice as wide as I wanted my pleats plus 1" and about twice as high as my finished purse height doesn't need to be exact. I sewed it into a long tube (right sides together) then folded the tube flat with the open seam in the center of the back. Then I sewed the bottom closed and turned the tube right side out. The top of my tube was the salvage edge and won't unravel, but if it wasn't I would have needed to tuck the top end inside and stitch closed. I top stitched around the edges of my folded tube and pinned the bottom 2" (1.5" for half of the depth and .5" for the seam allowance) up from the bottom of my rectangle for the outside of my purse and the top edge down 1" from the top (.5" for the seam allowance and .5" because I didn't want it butted up against the top). Oh, and I made sure it was centered.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6mH5McMB5qM/TzbZCqG7_zI/AAAAAAAAAO8/lLZm0D5tL1o/s1600/IMG_3918.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6mH5McMB5qM/TzbZCqG7_zI/AAAAAAAAAO8/lLZm0D5tL1o/s320/IMG_3918.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Then I folded and pinned wonky pleats. I had to reposition them a few times so they were spaced nicely. Then I stitched the pleats to the rectangle on top of all the top stitching that was still visible and along the top edge.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mu09B7nevZg/TzbZb7s_UDI/AAAAAAAAAPE/bqPZffLDx58/s1600/IMG_3919.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mu09B7nevZg/TzbZb7s_UDI/AAAAAAAAAPE/bqPZffLDx58/s320/IMG_3919.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Then I sewed the rectangles together along the sides and the bottom (right sides together).</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tbGSTVwoUQw/TzbZxUP6wxI/AAAAAAAAAPM/XqvdhgvHF68/s1600/IMG_3920.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tbGSTVwoUQw/TzbZxUP6wxI/AAAAAAAAAPM/XqvdhgvHF68/s320/IMG_3920.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I folded the sides toward the bottom and marked a 3" (the depth for my finished purse) line making sure half-way was on the matched up seams, and stitched on the line on both bottom corners.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cDf5iT2YV3U/TzbaIiprxPI/AAAAAAAAAPU/PwLYvyQynLI/s1600/IMG_3921.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cDf5iT2YV3U/TzbaIiprxPI/AAAAAAAAAPU/PwLYvyQynLI/s320/IMG_3921.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I clipped off the corner to reduce the bulk.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-D5RQ2_rQii4/Tzbaegw1ZjI/AAAAAAAAAPc/L0KwX4I-FU4/s1600/IMG_3922.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-D5RQ2_rQii4/Tzbaegw1ZjI/AAAAAAAAAPc/L0KwX4I-FU4/s320/IMG_3922.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Then I did the same thing to the lining rectangles but I left a whole in the middle of the bottom seam for turning right side out later.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5qFmKezbsQU/TzbYnVGBlnI/AAAAAAAAAO0/_ItXfQAUZy4/s1600/IMG_3917.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5qFmKezbsQU/TzbYnVGBlnI/AAAAAAAAAO0/_ItXfQAUZy4/s320/IMG_3917.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I didn't want to worry about ironing so I top stitched the outside layer of my purse along the side and bottom seams, getting as close to the corners as I could.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EOdkjRYYDP0/Tzba6PYcGeI/AAAAAAAAAPk/4zvMpFn81AM/s1600/IMG_3923.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EOdkjRYYDP0/Tzba6PYcGeI/AAAAAAAAAPk/4zvMpFn81AM/s320/IMG_3923.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I wanted a well defined base so I pinned 1.5" (half of my depth) out from each side of my bottom seam, and top stitched about 1/4" from the folds.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8oKsIauwro0/TzbbVi4W-MI/AAAAAAAAAPs/QU15YBcD-Mc/s1600/IMG_3924.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8oKsIauwro0/TzbbVi4W-MI/AAAAAAAAAPs/QU15YBcD-Mc/s320/IMG_3924.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">See, now it kind of stands up.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-s3H8LttxZrc/TzbbvV7JcFI/AAAAAAAAAP0/OfyAsvovEsE/s1600/IMG_3925.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-s3H8LttxZrc/TzbbvV7JcFI/AAAAAAAAAP0/OfyAsvovEsE/s320/IMG_3925.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">"When I get it all together" you won't see my projects sitting on an otherwise messy table. But if I wait to invite you into my house "when I get it all together" I don't think it will ever happen.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4RB_BsNNYbc/TzbcLKu-raI/AAAAAAAAAP8/wozpN8A-pZg/s1600/IMG_3926.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4RB_BsNNYbc/TzbcLKu-raI/AAAAAAAAAP8/wozpN8A-pZg/s320/IMG_3926.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Hmm...somewhere before this point I sewed together those curved rectangles (right sides together) clipped the curve, turned it right side out on the short straight end, and top stitched the edges. I pinned the curved end where I wanted it to attach on top of the ruffle, measured 3" (the depth of my purse) from the top of my purse, and cut off the excess.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6OfrJoFjbg4/TzbckpU4eSI/AAAAAAAAAQE/A9x5dMNO7TA/s1600/IMG_3927.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6OfrJoFjbg4/TzbckpU4eSI/AAAAAAAAAQE/A9x5dMNO7TA/s320/IMG_3927.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">Then I pinned the flat side to the center of the other top side of the purse (right sides together), and pinned the ends of my straps to the sides.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2mv6H4ep1gk/Tzbc96eCzwI/AAAAAAAAAQM/ai5CxaJEGjU/s320/IMG_3928.JPG" width="320" /></div><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">I pinned the lining and shell together (you guessed it, right sides together) and stitched them together.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DW-EvhIUHrM/TzbdWYyk0_I/AAAAAAAAAQU/zQhoKUTz53w/s1600/IMG_3929.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DW-EvhIUHrM/TzbdWYyk0_I/AAAAAAAAAQU/zQhoKUTz53w/s320/IMG_3929.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">I wanted to make sure my purse had plenty of definition, so after pulling the lining and shell apart, I folded and pinned 1.5" from each side of each side seam, marking 2" down on lining and 2" down on the shell (so 4 places all together.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kYwOatMJya4/Tzbdr02ZjmI/AAAAAAAAAQc/bGvgHVjTe2s/s1600/IMG_3930.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kYwOatMJya4/Tzbdr02ZjmI/AAAAAAAAAQc/bGvgHVjTe2s/s320/IMG_3930.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CJmvnVl5zd0/TzbeDfl4kYI/AAAAAAAAAQk/X0oo_nlNXrY/s1600/IMG_3931.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CJmvnVl5zd0/TzbeDfl4kYI/AAAAAAAAAQk/X0oo_nlNXrY/s320/IMG_3931.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gOstkSRck_E/TzbebdwaopI/AAAAAAAAAQs/uu_BU88iKQ4/s1600/IMG_3932.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gOstkSRck_E/TzbebdwaopI/AAAAAAAAAQs/uu_BU88iKQ4/s320/IMG_3932.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">Then I stitched lines on the 4 folds as narrow as I could measure on my machine.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-71R6LYUwVoo/Tzbe17p4LTI/AAAAAAAAAQ0/Ny4IDD9PfTw/s1600/IMG_3933.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-71R6LYUwVoo/Tzbe17p4LTI/AAAAAAAAAQ0/Ny4IDD9PfTw/s320/IMG_3933.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">Finally, I pulled my purse right side out through the hole in the lining...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jT8sC0Usdtk/TzbfN7KD4XI/AAAAAAAAAQ8/F_giJ__rz5Y/s1600/IMG_3934.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jT8sC0Usdtk/TzbfN7KD4XI/AAAAAAAAAQ8/F_giJ__rz5Y/s320/IMG_3934.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">...and top stitched the hole closed (nobody's going to see it other than my purse pilfering little girls).</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-c_VvM75BYSY/TzbfiWSvHGI/AAAAAAAAARE/T-70kiDZ8ws/s1600/IMG_3935.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-c_VvM75BYSY/TzbfiWSvHGI/AAAAAAAAARE/T-70kiDZ8ws/s320/IMG_3935.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">I top stitched the front and back top.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wOu6kbzsk90/Tzbf5m_eD0I/AAAAAAAAARM/ua8erb46x1c/s1600/IMG_3936.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wOu6kbzsk90/Tzbf5m_eD0I/AAAAAAAAARM/ua8erb46x1c/s320/IMG_3936.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">Ta da! I'm looking for a wooden toggle button to attach my flap.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-arZ-o0Rb1kM/TzbgQpbobsI/AAAAAAAAARU/uqVqQsVzWmE/s1600/IMG_3937.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-arZ-o0Rb1kM/TzbgQpbobsI/AAAAAAAAARU/uqVqQsVzWmE/s320/IMG_3937.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">This was the purse I made a couple weeks ago...kind of reminded me of a diaper. I won't bother telling you how I made it, but this is why I wanted plenty of definition.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BEbVqGXNAFc/Tzbgl3ZxpcI/AAAAAAAAARc/Be3U5pWuveA/s320/IMG_3938.JPG" width="320" /></div><br />

I made an apron for my niece with pockets for a pencil and paper to take orders.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here's what I did.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I used an apron I had made for my 4 year old as a pattern, but I had plenty of this material to use just one kind of fabric, and I wanted a different shape at the bottom. I folded the doubled up fabric and the apron and stacked them.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FiyOG5X8OG8/TukBpkL6ZmI/AAAAAAAAANc/fd2z_flrBkE/s1600/IMG_3611.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400px" oda="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FiyOG5X8OG8/TukBpkL6ZmI/AAAAAAAAANc/fd2z_flrBkE/s400/IMG_3611.JPG" width="300px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I cut 1/2" bigger using the outside top corner, waist, and length for references, and curved in between.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Z_3aw0ijJGU/TukCBdP-JuI/AAAAAAAAANk/FkEYToPYdpM/s1600/IMG_3612.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300px" oda="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Z_3aw0ijJGU/TukCBdP-JuI/AAAAAAAAANk/FkEYToPYdpM/s400/IMG_3612.JPG" width="400px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
See the 2 layers unfolded?</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-E_K7F0OQtNM/TukCdBcxH2I/AAAAAAAAANs/WavFoWqPQZI/s1600/IMG_3613.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300px" oda="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-E_K7F0OQtNM/TukCdBcxH2I/AAAAAAAAANs/WavFoWqPQZI/s400/IMG_3613.JPG" width="400px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I took one layer and pinned ribbons in place for the neck (about 16") and the side ties (length depends on child, but I made mine plenty long so they can be wrapped around and tied in front). I heat sealed my ribbon ends by melting them with a lighter--it will give the ends of the ties from becoming freyed and the insides from freying and pulling out.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HPRu3iIsTmI/TukC6e8k3TI/AAAAAAAAAN0/r5o_9UbgfU0/s1600/IMG_3614.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300px" oda="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HPRu3iIsTmI/TukC6e8k3TI/AAAAAAAAAN0/r5o_9UbgfU0/s400/IMG_3614.JPG" width="400px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then I stacked the other layer on top, right sides together and sewed the perimeter with a 1/2" seam allowance and left about a 8" opening. I left it open on a curve which was tricky. If I did it over I would have left it open on the less curvy bottom.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I clipped curves and corners before I turned it right side out so it wouldn't pucker.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QokoOg3Ymg4/TukDSCWwuyI/AAAAAAAAAN8/c23pXjdrnWI/s1600/IMG_3615.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300px" oda="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QokoOg3Ymg4/TukDSCWwuyI/AAAAAAAAAN8/c23pXjdrnWI/s400/IMG_3615.JPG" width="400px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I top stitched around the edges (and hid my opening this way without hand stitching--I just tucked the edges in and pinned them in place. It would have been so much easier if I had chosen a straight edge to leave open).</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-enX6JALDxIA/TukDukEFHuI/AAAAAAAAAOE/XFqkGMjKufk/s1600/IMG_3616.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400px" oda="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-enX6JALDxIA/TukDukEFHuI/AAAAAAAAAOE/XFqkGMjKufk/s400/IMG_3616.JPG" width="300px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I chose a contrasting fabric for a rectangular pocket and long strip that I folded in half and gathered along raw edges. I sewed the rectangle in half along open sides (leaving a whole to turn), then clipped corners, turned and top stitched one of the long sides.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YcxuNNHK-Xs/TukEBIRTYXI/AAAAAAAAAOM/iN8lqDGD9-s/s1600/IMG_3617.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300px" oda="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YcxuNNHK-Xs/TukEBIRTYXI/AAAAAAAAAOM/iN8lqDGD9-s/s400/IMG_3617.JPG" width="400px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Hmm...unfortunately blogger didn't rotate this picture.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then I sewed a ribbon on the apron to make a stem, spiraled my ruffle into a flower and machine sewed it on in a somewhat wonky fashion. Last, I sewed the pocket onto the apron where the pocket wasn't top stitched and sewed along one of the stripes to make a small pocket for a pencil and a wide pocket for a notepad.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QVEKHNYeQ_4/TukEakqUicI/AAAAAAAAAOU/kqhBikq7y1M/s1600/IMG_3618.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300px" oda="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QVEKHNYeQ_4/TukEakqUicI/AAAAAAAAAOU/kqhBikq7y1M/s400/IMG_3618.JPG" width="400px" /></a></div>

Our church's Christmas program was last night. Even though our little one wasn't in the program, we dressed her up too. I had to get pretty low so I could see her face under that huge bow!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vs7I_Mwlh4E/TuZieMUI65I/AAAAAAAAAM0/loYFIIEHxE0/s1600/IMG_3578.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300px" oda="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vs7I_Mwlh4E/TuZieMUI65I/AAAAAAAAAM0/loYFIIEHxE0/s400/IMG_3578.JPG" width="400px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It's hard to get everyone looking in the same direction at the same time.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AHXWE28yMfc/TuZiw1uGDRI/AAAAAAAAAM8/Y4k0HK9cfLM/s1600/IMG_3581.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300px" oda="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AHXWE28yMfc/TuZiw1uGDRI/AAAAAAAAAM8/Y4k0HK9cfLM/s400/IMG_3581.JPG" width="400px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Doesn't little H look ready to answer a question?</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8HoETCmMJYs/TuZjDAd4fWI/AAAAAAAAANE/K9NjeFSA8xU/s1600/IMG_3582.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300px" oda="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8HoETCmMJYs/TuZjDAd4fWI/AAAAAAAAANE/K9NjeFSA8xU/s400/IMG_3582.JPG" width="400px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is Z's class singing Jesus Loves Me and quoting the first part of John 3:16. Z can say the whole thing and had a hard time not sharing the fact with everyone...but we are pretty proud of her!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cSfSFLsIAGs/TuZjWPzRfRI/AAAAAAAAANM/sUlSgwJdqnE/s1600/IMG_3585.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300px" oda="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cSfSFLsIAGs/TuZjWPzRfRI/AAAAAAAAANM/sUlSgwJdqnE/s400/IMG_3585.JPG" width="400px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then there was a birthday party for Jesus afterward, and H wanted to show off her candle blowing skills. Actually, she hasn't managed to blow out a candle out yet, but she looks pretty cute with her lips stuck out.</div>

We red Jan Brett's The Gingerbread Baby this weekend at my mom's house. Fortunately I had purchased a gingerbread house kit at Aldi's for $7 that was waiting at home to be put together!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
By the way <a href="http://www.janbrett.com/index.html">Jan Brett has a neat website</a> full of printables, coloring pages, and online activities that features her beautiful artwork and goes along with her books.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oTJY6rqvKto/Tt0ttpWu-sI/AAAAAAAAAMU/9-G9n1066Lk/s1600/IMG_3569.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" dda="true" height="300px" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oTJY6rqvKto/Tt0ttpWu-sI/AAAAAAAAAMU/9-G9n1066Lk/s400/IMG_3569.JPG" width="400px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So we cleaned up a spot on the table just big enough to put it together.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We hot glue the gingerbread pieces together at my house like we did when I was a little girl. Who wants to eat gingerbread and candy that has been sitting on the counter for a month anyway (besides, my germaphobic husband doesn't think we should be ingesting the dust that gathers on it...actually, that does sound kind of gross).</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-53uJmxm7GJk/Tt0t_vvn0VI/AAAAAAAAAMc/94BJLe_QwVU/s1600/IMG_3567.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" dda="true" height="300px" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-53uJmxm7GJk/Tt0t_vvn0VI/AAAAAAAAAMc/94BJLe_QwVU/s400/IMG_3567.JPG" width="400px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The 1 1/2 year old got in on the candy action too...she handed me candy to stick on. She tried sticking the candy on herself, but she ended up sticking her fingers in the frosting instead. She thought it was a lot of fun to put candy in a little bowl and dump it out over and over again...1 year olds really don't need toys do they?</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-85K-8cxqsHo/Tt0uTxcUi8I/AAAAAAAAAMk/nzQbjfSnIYA/s1600/IMG_3568.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" dda="true" height="300px" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-85K-8cxqsHo/Tt0uTxcUi8I/AAAAAAAAAMk/nzQbjfSnIYA/s400/IMG_3568.JPG" width="400px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
She has decided this is her picture face the last few days...I usually don't ask for poses, so I'm not sure where she came up with the idea.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-u8gu1pdKshM/Tt0uoPCfQFI/AAAAAAAAAMs/dZl28tJfp-Q/s1600/IMG_3574.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" dda="true" height="300px" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-u8gu1pdKshM/Tt0uoPCfQFI/AAAAAAAAAMs/dZl28tJfp-Q/s400/IMG_3574.JPG" width="400px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And of course when she is done with that face, she has herself a good laugh.</div>Hilaryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14838930100436568142noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2249402161268398562.post-87588186161948499682011-11-14T21:14:00.001-06:002011-11-14T21:32:09.212-06:00Birthday Tea Party<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_WMQG5W9sUc/TsGSxhU6EAI/AAAAAAAAAL0/0dxo82x3FnE/s1600/IMG_3486.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300px" nda="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_WMQG5W9sUc/TsGSxhU6EAI/AAAAAAAAAL0/0dxo82x3FnE/s400/IMG_3486.JPG" width="400px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The party has come and gone, so here is a promised picture of the matching dresses along with a doll sized party hat.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-V4wQJEZfr4U/TsG4MjXoJqI/AAAAAAAAAMM/1v7WW3nSwOk/s1600/Tea+Party+Dresses.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640px" nda="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-V4wQJEZfr4U/TsG4MjXoJqI/AAAAAAAAAMM/1v7WW3nSwOk/s640/Tea+Party+Dresses.JPG" width="486px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The kids enjoyed drinking pink lemonade from tiny demitasse tea cups while the adults had hot tea and pink lemonade. I was fortunate to have some help in making dainty tea treats.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AtdhIE0ge8E/TsGSI7R3zMI/AAAAAAAAALc/ZS5RspQK7u8/s1600/IMG_3448.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" nda="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AtdhIE0ge8E/TsGSI7R3zMI/AAAAAAAAALc/ZS5RspQK7u8/s320/IMG_3448.JPG" width="320px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I started making this bunting before our 1 year old's birthday this summer, but had to hang it without letters because I ran out of time. I should have finished the letters right after that instead of waiting until two days before this party...long night. It is triangles cut from t-shirts, overlapping slightly, and held together by two rows of stitching and fastened at the end with narrow strips of t-shirt tied in a bow.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0I1uJFC17Bs/TsGSbaNDOSI/AAAAAAAAALs/SlSwT3BHhg4/s1600/IMG_3484.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="161px" nda="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0I1uJFC17Bs/TsGSbaNDOSI/AAAAAAAAALs/SlSwT3BHhg4/s400/IMG_3484.JPG" width="400px" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yQUMPL9CPnA/TsGSRNA36UI/AAAAAAAAALk/79bfeIJK8Mk/s1600/IMG_3483.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300px" nda="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yQUMPL9CPnA/TsGSRNA36UI/AAAAAAAAALk/79bfeIJK8Mk/s400/IMG_3483.JPG" width="400px" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We had a tea pot cake made from two bundts, one cup cake, and paper covered cardboard spout and handle. Unfortunately our camera battery was running low, so my camera didn't get a shot of the cake before it was cut, but we saved the tea cups and I got this picture later. They are shaved off cupcakes with chocolate piped on top and frosted, broken mini pretzels for handles. The white things are rose buds...you could tell right?</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-L_Ih3l7MvBA/TsGS3ovf_bI/AAAAAAAAAL8/uzM1LIBJ_zs/s1600/IMG_3489.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300px" nda="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-L_Ih3l7MvBA/TsGS3ovf_bI/AAAAAAAAAL8/uzM1LIBJ_zs/s400/IMG_3489.JPG" width="400px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And after the dainty little tea party, our newly 4 year old had to go out with her dad to shoot balloons with her new BB gun (what a Daddy's girl).</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-P3CwdNRWGPU/TsGTVIXbQOI/AAAAAAAAAME/9f5nPnYzKkA/s1600/IMG_3491.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300px" nda="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-P3CwdNRWGPU/TsGTVIXbQOI/AAAAAAAAAME/9f5nPnYzKkA/s400/IMG_3491.JPG" width="400px" /></a></div>

I made a little jumper so Glendora the Cabbage Patch Girl can match Z at her birthday party. Glendora is hard to get away secretly for a fitting, but I managed to be sneaky when Arena the teddy bear was sleeping with Z instead of Glendora. You will have to wait until after the party to see pictures of the models actually wearing their new attire though.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I thought I would document how I put the waistbands together in case I ever decide to make a flat front, elasticized waistband again. I've seen tutorials for flat front pants, but I haven't looked enough to find a tutorial for a gathered skirt...so here's what I did. These pictures are from the doll's jumper (on the big girl jumper, I did a better finish than just pinking the edges).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ty2MHD-yQGs/TrLfX159EuI/AAAAAAAAAK8/z9k58SLF_RE/s1600/IMG_3426.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" ida="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ty2MHD-yQGs/TrLfX159EuI/AAAAAAAAAK8/z9k58SLF_RE/s320/IMG_3426.JPG" width="320px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I took the waist measurement...lets call it "w". The front piece is w/2, the back piece is w/2+5". Make sure to make the pieces tall enough to allow for your cassing relative to your elastic width, and still allow about 1/2" below to attach your skirt. Sew your cassing in place on both pieces (on the short piece this is mostly for looks). The top stitching along the fold is optional, but I like the way it looks and I think it might keep the elastic from twisting as much.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--ESys9B3_xY/TrLfv_tRt5I/AAAAAAAAALE/lmGSTnDIXGo/s1600/IMG_3427.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" ida="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--ESys9B3_xY/TrLfv_tRt5I/AAAAAAAAALE/lmGSTnDIXGo/s320/IMG_3427.JPG" width="320px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Insert your elastic in the long back piece and gather the material so that the front and back are now the same length. Pin elastic in place and trim excess elastic if you haven't already.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-11Eljd_NNa4/TrLgJ89kpfI/AAAAAAAAALM/awTOKYFbbuE/s1600/IMG_3428.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" ida="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-11Eljd_NNa4/TrLgJ89kpfI/AAAAAAAAALM/awTOKYFbbuE/s320/IMG_3428.JPG" width="320px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
With right sides together, sew front to back along sides. (Gives a new meaning to nice threads, huh?)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now you are ready for the rest of your skirt!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I can't wait to show you my soon to be 4 year old and her baby doll in their new duds, but it will have to wait a couple weeks.</div>Hilaryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14838930100436568142noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2249402161268398562.post-32693370419348895952011-10-25T15:20:00.001-05:002011-11-03T13:29:26.327-05:00The Birthday Jumper<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm so excited about this!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You should see it on little miss Z...except she isn't nearly as excited about it as I am...even though she picked it out. This is not the material I would have picked for a birthday tea party frock, but it's cute. She'll wear it with a black turtle neck and black tights.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CG8VmmYRXwk/TqcU3YVbGdI/AAAAAAAAAJ0/TVCOnfr_xHw/s1600/IMG_3384.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" ida="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CG8VmmYRXwk/TqcU3YVbGdI/AAAAAAAAAJ0/TVCOnfr_xHw/s320/IMG_3384.JPG" width="320px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For the skirt, I pretty much followed <a href="http://www.themotherhuddle.com/tutorial-the-twirling-whilst-standing-still-skirt/">this tutorial</a> from The Mother Huddle, but I used 3 1/2" waist band fabric, 6" lining fabric, 7 1/2" outer skirt fabric, and 7" under skirt fabric. I also did my own thing for the waist band so I could have a flat front to attach the bib to.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JK1POTaTsD4/TqcVTO-byrI/AAAAAAAAAJ8/1Xt4WtwW84M/s1600/IMG_3385.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" ida="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JK1POTaTsD4/TqcVTO-byrI/AAAAAAAAAJ8/1Xt4WtwW84M/s320/IMG_3385.JPG" width="320px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The bib is a trapezoid--I cut out 7" across the top, 5" across the bottom, and 10" high. I made a ruffle and sandwiched it between the elephant trapezoid and the lining trapezoid and sewed them together except for the bottom edge. Then I made a strap to go around the neck since I didn't have enough fabric left to make straps to cross in the back. (Can you see that I haven't finished the button closure yet?)</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_6ZqMDzQJ20/TqcVqnXQLzI/AAAAAAAAAKE/hor94vxUD18/s1600/IMG_3386.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" ida="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_6ZqMDzQJ20/TqcVqnXQLzI/AAAAAAAAAKE/hor94vxUD18/s320/IMG_3386.JPG" width="320px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I need to make a matching dress for Glendora, the Cabbage Patch Girl...anyone interested in a tutorial?</div>

So I have corduroy elephants and paisley purple corduroy that I want to make tea party worthy (doesn't sound like a great fit, but it seemed the wrong season for light weight cotton).<br />
<br />
I have Alice in Wonderland style dress in mind, but I'm not sure I can pull it off in corduroy. I think I'm going to make something like <a href="http://www.themotherhuddle.com/tutorial-the-twirling-whilst-standing-still-skirt/">this skirt</a> from The Mother Huddle blog with some slight modifications.<br />
<img alt="" class="aligncenter" height="353px" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-7RaXig97ZNY/TfpFJraomzI/AAAAAAAAKmQ/2bJajKXgTiY/14668130550.jpg" width="600px" /><br />
Hopefully, when I'm done, the yoke section won't be so long, the front will be flat, and there will be a trapezoid bib attached with criss-crossing straps in the back. Wish me luck!Hilaryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14838930100436568142noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2249402161268398562.post-90615568721981966382011-10-15T13:31:00.000-05:002011-10-15T13:31:27.239-05:004th Birthday PartyMy 3 year old will be turning 4 soon. We've been talking about party themes...she has wanted Olivia Pig, a Princess Tea Party, a Star and Kitty Cat, a Pizza, and a House...all in the past month. I told her we need to be finalizing things and I think I have her convinced to have a Dolly and Me Tea Party. Oh boy, I've wanted a tea party for a long time (I probably should have done that for one of the girl's first birthday parties when they didn't have an opinion).<br />
<br />
I've been looking at ideas online. I like <a href="http://ourscoop.blogspot.com/2009/03/dolly-and-me-tea-party.html">this cake</a> <img alt="" border="0" closure_uid_57pncx="21" height="426px" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5316609192476858386" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_wt1YKLfQEEw/Schj5Fco2BI/AAAAAAAABqU/3t7Zgz2b6JQ/s640/IMG_9744.JPG" style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;" width="640px" />from Our Scoop blog, and <a href="http://www.thebirthdayblog.net/search/label/Teapot%20Cake">this cake</a><img alt="" border="0" closure_uid_t28ob0="3" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5508735185067085234" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9HtfDchJT5g/THL1dtuejbI/AAAAAAAACJw/3Z2oFTIgFM0/s400/teapot5_edited-1.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 262px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 400px;" /> from The Birthday Blog. I've also seen a cake with the spout and handle made from sugar cookies. I don't want to mess with fondant and I think I will make the cake from 2 bundt cakes instead of cooking the cakes in my mixing bowls. I'm afraid of burning the outside to get the inside cooked.<br />
<br />
I have a problem though...all of our family lives far away so I feed everyone lunch. In the past I've served chili, or hot dogs, but that just doesn't seem fitting for a tea party. Can I get any budget conscious, tea worthy ideas?Hilaryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14838930100436568142noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2249402161268398562.post-62302285690675992602011-10-11T15:31:00.004-05:002011-10-13T10:34:16.091-05:00Fixing Mystery Holes in my Shirts<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I decorated this shirt after being inspired by a <a href="http://www.rufflesandstuff.com/2010/05/bouquet-t-shirt-tutorial.html">tutorial</a> Disney did at Ruffles and Stuff a while back.<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0eAbrRqK7V8/TpSZHcagtpI/AAAAAAAAAI8/kEBWCepxjwM/s1600/IMG_3238.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320px" kca="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0eAbrRqK7V8/TpSZHcagtpI/AAAAAAAAAI8/kEBWCepxjwM/s320/IMG_3238.JPG" width="240px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But I found this in the lower center of the shirt before I washed it the other day...</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-t3c4sKG6EvA/TpSZh9BKeyI/AAAAAAAAAJE/IkoaXmoIKG8/s1600/IMG_3239.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320px" kca="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-t3c4sKG6EvA/TpSZh9BKeyI/AAAAAAAAAJE/IkoaXmoIKG8/s320/IMG_3239.JPG" width="240px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I've been frustrated recently because I've had this happen to a lot of shirts in the same place. My husband thought it was silver fish, but I thought the placement was too consistent. I thought maybe it was from my pants rubbing on my shirts when I carried kids, but I normally carry them on my hip (I know bad for my back huh...they don't care, though and dinner still needs to be made).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I finally realized the culprit...no wonder I got a good deal on it at a garage sale. It looked to innocent.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Hl_nSo3DHNY/TpSZ2OEDHvI/AAAAAAAAAJM/vRVzyLXWg8E/s1600/IMG_3240.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320px" kca="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Hl_nSo3DHNY/TpSZ2OEDHvI/AAAAAAAAAJM/vRVzyLXWg8E/s320/IMG_3240.JPG" width="240px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I fixed that shirt (well, made do at least) by catching loops from the inside of the shirt with needle and thread, but my next shirt was too far gone for that technique to work. It needed a patch really. I kept laying a couple strips of fabric on in different directions, but I just didn't like how it looked, and I didn't think I could pull off flowers or ruffles on top of my pant zipper. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then I thought of this.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-D6lD8IY3ong/TpSaIoPxK2I/AAAAAAAAAJU/HNh9RIlMrDE/s1600/IMG_3311.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320px" kca="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-D6lD8IY3ong/TpSaIoPxK2I/AAAAAAAAAJU/HNh9RIlMrDE/s320/IMG_3311.JPG" width="240px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I love the bird and branch silhouettes I've been seeing for a while, but I don't have the guts to put it on any of my walls. I think I like it here. It looks like something that I might see screen printed on a shirt. Here are some close ups.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Jd47ywH2ZyY/TpSai5GgicI/AAAAAAAAAJc/Xqt9-b0-Dvg/s1600/IMG_3312.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320px" kca="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Jd47ywH2ZyY/TpSai5GgicI/AAAAAAAAAJc/Xqt9-b0-Dvg/s320/IMG_3312.JPG" width="240px" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I finally finished my other jacket! I used one of my 3 year old's shirts for reference, but cut my pieces about 1 inch larger because I wanted it to be able to fit over other clothes. I cut the bottom about 2 inches below the armpit thinking I was going to make a jacket with an empire waist, but after trying it on halfway through, my daughter and I decided it should be a bolero.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VEkps-cs3cA/TpNJVMOqPYI/AAAAAAAAAIk/tEq5ee_ipWI/s1600/IMG_3109.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" kca="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VEkps-cs3cA/TpNJVMOqPYI/AAAAAAAAAIk/tEq5ee_ipWI/s320/IMG_3109.JPG" width="320px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I folded my material in half to cut it out to make sure it would be symmetrical. (note: I cut out two of these)</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uEMC8ZIitZU/TpNJ8ol7A6I/AAAAAAAAAIo/dW8PJHVBumo/s1600/IMG_3110.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" kca="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uEMC8ZIitZU/TpNJ8ol7A6I/AAAAAAAAAIo/dW8PJHVBumo/s320/IMG_3110.JPG" width="320px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I took one and folded it in half to cut the front open and lower the neckline.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-EGg4_6Lpv70/TpNKbZIUfUI/AAAAAAAAAIs/7N2ya4lt6wk/s1600/IMG_3112.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" kca="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-EGg4_6Lpv70/TpNKbZIUfUI/AAAAAAAAAIs/7N2ya4lt6wk/s320/IMG_3112.JPG" width="320px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I traced the sleeve of the existing shirt to get this cutting line too, but I made sure and lined it up with the hem of the shirt I was reusing.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DbvSsGZIlwI/TpNK7BUz9HI/AAAAAAAAAIw/hBSlt6KFmho/s1600/IMG_3113.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" kca="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DbvSsGZIlwI/TpNK7BUz9HI/AAAAAAAAAIw/hBSlt6KFmho/s320/IMG_3113.JPG" width="320px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
No pictures of the rest of the process, but it was pretty standard. I basically did something kind of like <a href="http://crafterhours.blogspot.com/2010/07/ringer-shirt-tutorial.html">this</a> link from Crafterhours, but there is no ribbing to worry about. Then I made bias tape like <a href="http://www.craftinessisnotoptional.com/2009/08/scrub-dub-washcloth-and-bias-tape.html">this</a> tutorial from Craftiness is not Optional, and sewed it all the way around. Finally, I made a rectangle with 2 button wholes and sewed buttons on both sides of the front opening.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-48MNTsku7fY/TpNLVhAxjcI/AAAAAAAAAI0/916ydsEpcPA/s1600/IMG_3287.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" kca="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-48MNTsku7fY/TpNLVhAxjcI/AAAAAAAAAI0/916ydsEpcPA/s320/IMG_3287.JPG" width="320px" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EPXwpp_rzns/TpNLnYVwv9I/AAAAAAAAAI4/Yn-OyoZ-UNo/s1600/IMG_3296.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320px" kca="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EPXwpp_rzns/TpNLnYVwv9I/AAAAAAAAAI4/Yn-OyoZ-UNo/s320/IMG_3296.JPG" width="240px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My 1 year old just won't stay away with her books, and you don't want to see the 3 year old's face...well, maybe I don't want you to see her face.</div>

I ended up with a straw Christmas wreath that I stripped bare, and a book about Princes Grace (I didn't want anyone admiring my wreath to think I allowed trashy romance novels in even if I wasn't going to read it). The only thing I changed from the tutorial was to tie my hanging ribbon on before I started gluing pages (I used about 350 pages), and I covered the back with smashed page tubes as you can see in the last pic.<br />
<br />
Here's how mine turned out...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-X9wLjZVa3gw/Tnze7QdNdrI/AAAAAAAAAIU/wjjMy6o8pT8/s1600/IMG_3169.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hca="true" height="640px" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-X9wLjZVa3gw/Tnze7QdNdrI/AAAAAAAAAIU/wjjMy6o8pT8/s640/IMG_3169.JPG" width="480px" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fGeFDP2aAK0/TnzfWK8zL3I/AAAAAAAAAIY/ZkyLqJ8uqME/s1600/IMG_3170.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hca="true" height="240px" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fGeFDP2aAK0/TnzfWK8zL3I/AAAAAAAAAIY/ZkyLqJ8uqME/s320/IMG_3170.JPG" width="320px" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6Qr6nKQQ4lU/TnzfyZ6_91I/AAAAAAAAAIc/94ofwKRJgJU/s1600/IMG_3171.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hca="true" height="320px" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6Qr6nKQQ4lU/TnzfyZ6_91I/AAAAAAAAAIc/94ofwKRJgJU/s320/IMG_3171.JPG" width="240px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I am going to be hanging this wreath in a window, so I did this to hid the back of the wreath.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_2pTy16_y_c/TnzgUpZc3MI/AAAAAAAAAIg/bYkI_0ufuQo/s1600/IMG_3172.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hca="true" height="640px" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_2pTy16_y_c/TnzgUpZc3MI/AAAAAAAAAIg/bYkI_0ufuQo/s640/IMG_3172.JPG" width="480px" /></a></div>Hilaryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14838930100436568142noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2249402161268398562.post-22936489430012228232011-09-18T14:47:00.000-05:002011-09-18T14:47:36.129-05:00Cardigan #1<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I finally finished the first cardigan I started <a href="http://whenigetitalltogether.blogspot.com/2011/09/beginning-cardigan.html">here</a>. I took the long folded fabric from the mentioned post They are 3" wide and as long as the cardigan front) and folded the ends of the fabric inside, then sewed the long sides closed with the openings of the cardigan sandwiched inside.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then I cut 2 rectangles of fabric twice as long as the sleeve openings are around and 3" wide. I sewed the short ends together to make tubes, then fold the tube in half with wrong sides together and zig zagged the raw edges.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nmuZBuhhRMA/TnZEmon5kEI/AAAAAAAAAIE/5Ux12cJqXAE/s1600/IMG_3117.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300px" rba="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nmuZBuhhRMA/TnZEmon5kEI/AAAAAAAAAIE/5Ux12cJqXAE/s400/IMG_3117.JPG" width="400px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After that, I basted beside the zig zag and gathered to match the sleeve openings.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Yxw9hQZ6vHc/TnZFD3QZvgI/AAAAAAAAAII/MD9vhfCEiBc/s1600/IMG_3118.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300px" rba="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Yxw9hQZ6vHc/TnZFD3QZvgI/AAAAAAAAAII/MD9vhfCEiBc/s400/IMG_3118.JPG" width="400px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
With my sleeves turned inside out and folded to the right length, I pinned the ruffles on the current outside of the sleeve and zig zagged in place to allow some give. Then I trimmed off the extra material that was turned up.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BWF5bLaLbs4/TnZFY7PHfbI/AAAAAAAAAIM/q3AVJ0Gppmk/s1600/IMG_3119.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300px" rba="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BWF5bLaLbs4/TnZFY7PHfbI/AAAAAAAAAIM/q3AVJ0Gppmk/s400/IMG_3119.JPG" width="400px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The circles are cut from my material and scrap from the sweater that I finished with frey check, and attached with a few crossing rows of zig zags.</div>

In fact I cut out I started the second this morning, but haven't done enough to post yet. I'd be working on it now, but I'd have to go through my daughters' room to get my sewing machine and I'm not sure if the 1 year old is asleep yet.<br />
<br />
I made bagels yesterday! I'd thought about it before, but I thought it would be too hard. Then I found a recipe at <a href="http://www.thewhimsicalwife.com/2011/09/tasty-tuesday-homemade-bagels-ruth-dean.html">Diaries of a Whimsical Wife</a>. It really wasn't that hard after all, but I forgot that Fahrenheit isn't the universal measurement for temperature, and tried to cook my bagels at 220 degrees Fahrenheit. I thought it was kind of low, but I'd never baked something that was boiled first. I got to thinking about where the Whimsical Wife lives (Australia) halfway through baking, and realized I should probably be using a hotter oven. I reset my oven for 350 when I flipped them over and after that did another 5 minutes on the first side. They turned out okay...not too doughy, but I toast them before I eat them anyway.<br />
<br />
Here are mine. Oh, and half of my flour was whole white wheat.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-m7dF2LAdgSU/TnOr34CBD6I/AAAAAAAAAH8/cogtTKanTAk/s1600/IMG_3114.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="291px" rba="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-m7dF2LAdgSU/TnOr34CBD6I/AAAAAAAAAH8/cogtTKanTAk/s400/IMG_3114.JPG" width="400px" /></a></div>Hilaryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14838930100436568142noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2249402161268398562.post-69405913016845598122011-09-14T11:00:00.000-05:002011-09-14T11:00:19.797-05:00Beginning a Cardigan<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I started one of my cardigans that I mentioned in my last post. The first is made from one of my pull over sweaters. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I traced a shirt that fits my 3 year old onto a big piece of brown paper. If you want yours to fit over bulkier clothes don't for get to make your pattern a little bigger than a normal fitting shirt. I also folded the pattern in half and trimmed/added so it was symmetrical.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then I pinned the pattern directly onto my inside out sweater making sure to match up the collar. Then I sewed along the pattern. I found that this made the fabric more stable without leaving anything that would need to be torn away later. I wanted a long cardigan, so I gradually angled my stitching line from the waist of the shirt pattern out to the lower corners of the existing sweater. I also wasn't sure what I wanted to do abut cuffs, so I continued sewing past my sleeve patterns to the end of the sweater sleeves.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RK3-zwaHaOM/TnDEObcgXHI/AAAAAAAAAHo/GueFuCk1v0E/s1600/IMG_3089.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" rba="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RK3-zwaHaOM/TnDEObcgXHI/AAAAAAAAAHo/GueFuCk1v0E/s320/IMG_3089.JPG" width="320px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now we have a long sweater with long sleeves. Next I folded the sweater in half and cut all the way up the front.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-D-Jv_RZPIFk/TnDEuJYu4LI/AAAAAAAAAHs/vNcMoE716OA/s1600/IMG_3090.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320px" rba="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-D-Jv_RZPIFk/TnDEuJYu4LI/AAAAAAAAAHs/vNcMoE716OA/s320/IMG_3090.JPG" width="240px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I tried using an iron on adhesive to finish the raw edges in front. Here I ironed it on the edge and am removing the backing.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6IKjl6Mk5rc/TnDFC_waOyI/AAAAAAAAAHw/1y4_IjdQmPo/s1600/IMG_3091.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" rba="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6IKjl6Mk5rc/TnDFC_waOyI/AAAAAAAAAHw/1y4_IjdQmPo/s320/IMG_3091.JPG" width="320px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But when I tried to fold it over and iron it in place, it just wouldn't take. I think it had to do with the weight of the fabric and the low temperature of the iron, but I was afraid to turn it up because the sweater is acrylic.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TXRzS0qDzSk/TnDFlg-LnVI/AAAAAAAAAH0/a18Ox5B-ur4/s1600/IMG_3092.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" rba="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TXRzS0qDzSk/TnDFlg-LnVI/AAAAAAAAAH0/a18Ox5B-ur4/s320/IMG_3092.JPG" width="320px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So I fixed it with this material that I cut and folded kind of like bias tape (but I didn't cut on the bias).</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VVt3zFR47EA/TnDGDvezP5I/AAAAAAAAAH4/mgNnIi_Dnq0/s1600/IMG_3093.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" rba="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VVt3zFR47EA/TnDGDvezP5I/AAAAAAAAAH4/mgNnIi_Dnq0/s320/IMG_3093.JPG" width="320px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'll have to save embellishments for another day. In the mean time, anyone have an idea what to do with the sleeves that I still have folded up like I did in the picture above?</div>Hilaryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14838930100436568142noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2249402161268398562.post-43869082583096698552011-09-12T20:13:00.000-05:002011-09-12T20:13:37.455-05:00Cardigan IdeasMy 3 year old needs something to wear over her sleeveless dresses. I've been doing some looking around and I think I'm going to make a couple out of a white t-shirt and a grey pull-over sweater using these techniques. Both have tutorials on their blogs.<br />
<a href="http://shwinandshwin.blogspot.com/2011/09/cozy-fall-cardigan.html"><img border="0" height="490px" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MqVBUOun9HE/TmBrtOo6K8I/AAAAAAAAETk/WsAcUutG7kE/s640/cardi11.jpg" width="640px" /></a><br />

My 3 year old wanted to know when I was going to make something for her after the <a href="http://whenigetitalltogether.blogspot.com/2011/09/chicken-little.html">chicken little </a>that I made for her little sister. So I made her an owl kind of like one I found at <a href="http://justanotherhangup.blogspot.com/2010/05/give-hoot-pillow.html">Just Another Hang Up</a>. You should check it out because Suzanne uses much prettier fabric than I have in my scrap pile.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I made mine a little different, but I started out with two circles to make my outline like Suzanne did. Mine is cut from a fleece blanket as requested.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="240px" nba="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QNfJUxPNaqs/TmqqzqrztMI/AAAAAAAAAHI/kHUc8T9biEE/s320/IMG_3027.JPG" width="320px" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then I cut a couple t-shirts up to get the lower body and the wings following the body about 1/2 inch over half of the circle. I piled them on upside down (I stuck two triangles of fleece in the middle pointed up too) and sewed through the center of the circle, so that when I flipped them back down...</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JWOhLM6eV7c/TmqrP9adyuI/AAAAAAAAAHM/vFmMPsc8HhU/s1600/IMG_3028.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" nba="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JWOhLM6eV7c/TmqrP9adyuI/AAAAAAAAAHM/vFmMPsc8HhU/s320/IMG_3028.JPG" width="320px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
...they lined up with the bottom part of the owl. I cut two sets of t-shirt circles and sewed them on in an x pattern for the eyes.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nnORJwpcN4M/Tmqrswmyj8I/AAAAAAAAAHQ/BDoChdA5y7w/s1600/IMG_3029.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" nba="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nnORJwpcN4M/Tmqrswmyj8I/AAAAAAAAAHQ/BDoChdA5y7w/s320/IMG_3029.JPG" width="320px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
To keep the wings floppy (what 3 year old doesn't appreciate moving parts), I folded the wings to the middle at this point and added fleece feet. ( I like the freedom that working with fleece and knit gives. I don't have to worry about finnishing my edges).</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iYzL86FqfZA/TmqsKiKnx0I/AAAAAAAAAHU/z6XEgYJM510/s1600/IMG_3030.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" nba="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iYzL86FqfZA/TmqsKiKnx0I/AAAAAAAAAHU/z6XEgYJM510/s320/IMG_3030.JPG" width="320px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I pinned the back on top of it all and sewed around the outside.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-k2LF5GtrFpE/Tmqse60M9fI/AAAAAAAAAHY/MiQiT9VTzU4/s1600/IMG_3031.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" nba="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-k2LF5GtrFpE/Tmqse60M9fI/AAAAAAAAAHY/MiQiT9VTzU4/s320/IMG_3031.JPG" width="320px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The owl is still open at the top at this point, which made me think if I had used something sturdier than fleece, this would have made a fun little purse.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9ixBbml6spc/Tmqs45q7XQI/AAAAAAAAAHc/bAgUmX4UrOk/s1600/IMG_3032.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" nba="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9ixBbml6spc/Tmqs45q7XQI/AAAAAAAAAHc/bAgUmX4UrOk/s320/IMG_3032.JPG" width="320px" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After I stuffed the owl I zig-zagged it closed with the raw edges exposed.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kI-Y208mPEo/TmqtNZekUGI/AAAAAAAAAHg/RB7mjWwUgyg/s1600/IMG_3033.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" nba="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kI-Y208mPEo/TmqtNZekUGI/AAAAAAAAAHg/RB7mjWwUgyg/s320/IMG_3033.JPG" width="320px" /></a></div>
